The Man with the Van in the 1930s and 1940s

Brian Homersham, who was born in 1915, was always practical and creative; even as a child, he created his own studio where he could experiment. He began his work as an electrical apprentice at the Christchurch Municipal Electricity Department and later earned degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering.

Despite the possibility of World War II, Brian traveled to the United Kingdom in 1939 because of his desire to expand his technical knowledge. He traveled by sea and spent his journey in the ship’s engine room because he was always practical. Soon after his arrival, war broke out, and Brian found himself working at the Ministry of Supply in the ordnance department to support the war effort.

Brian and his fiancee got married in 1944 after she visited the UK. After World War II, they went on a joint trip of the UK to meet with a few suppliers in order to prepare for the business they planned to start when they got back to New Zealand.

This was a difficult assignment because there was neither a list of clients nor an established company in New Zealand. Because the product was so sophisticated, Brian had to pitch himself as the engineer.

Three months after their arrival in New Zealand, in the middle of 1946, Brian and his wife established the business B. R. Homersham Ltd (BRH) in a single room at 82 Hereford Street in Christchurch.
